Former Police Officer Sentenced to Life for Stealing Teenager's Bitcoin
Former police officer Heylem was sentenced to life in prison for stealing Bitcoin from a teenager. In August 2024, he and three accomplices posed as police officers, breaking into an apartment and threatening the teenager with violence. They stole a hard drive containing the keys to his cryptocurrency wallets.
The court found that Heylem acted out of 'pure and absolute greed' and denied his motion for a retrial. The defense had argued that their initial attorneys failed to call witnesses and examine key evidence, but Judge Mildred Escobedo disagreed.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the thieves also stole cash and jewelry during the robbery. They arrived at the scene in a green Range Rover and an orange Lamborghini Urus.
