A former Secretary of Defense has argued that crypto legislation is a national security concern. Mark Esper, who led the Pentagon from 2019 to 2020, made this claim in an interview with the Financial Times.

Esper believes that passing the Clarity Act would help address some of crypto's biggest weaknesses and mitigate risks associated with hacks originating from North Korea and organized criminal groups. The bill would require exchanges and other financial institutions to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations, making it harder for attackers to escape the crypto sector with stolen funds.

The Clarity Act is scheduled to be voted on September 15 in the U.S. Senate. If passed, it could have a positive impact on chains like Solana and Ethereum, which have decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems. The bill would also expand some of the Treasury Department's powers to include digital assets.

However, investors should be cautious about the bill's passage, as ongoing disagreements over key issues may push the actual vote into 2027 or beyond.
