Four-Phase Delisting Process Leaves Crypto Holders Vulnerable

Share

Crypto exchanges often announce delisting months in advance, but the process can be complex and confusing for holders. The announcement is usually buried in an exchange's support section, making it easy to overlook.

When a token is delisted, four restrictions are applied in sequence: deposit freeze, trading halt, withdrawal freeze, and transfer of residual balance to an untradable account. The dates between these restrictions can vary significantly, with some exchanges leaving three months or more between the trading halt and withdrawal deadline.

The first restriction, deposit freeze, is the mildest, but it's also often overlooked. It prevents new deposits from being made, while existing holdings remain unaffected. However, transfers from other addresses are also blocked, making consolidation of holdings impossible on the departing exchange.

The trading halt removes the sell button, but the token remains in the account with a visible market value. This is where many holders misjudge the situation, thinking everything is fine when it's not.

The withdrawal deadline is the decisive one, as it marks the last opportunity to rescue holdings before they're stuck in an untradable account. Exchanges typically set this deadline generously, but it's still essential to take action beforehand.

Once withdrawals close, the holding is moved into a general balance account and kept under a heading of 'Untradable assets.' While the token remains visible, it can no longer be traded or withdrawn, leaving holders with a position that has no way out.
