France Leads Crypto Violence Surge Amid Home Invasion Epidemic

Crypto losses from violent attacks have exceeded $30 million in 2026. According to Chainalysis, this is a concerning trend that may surpass last year's record of $58 million in wrench attacks. If this pace continues, 2026 could become the worst year on record for crypto-related violence.

Chainalysis has documented 46 violent crypto incidents worldwide by mid-2026, with 12 resulting in theft. This represents a success rate of 26%, down from 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024. The analysts attribute this decrease to an increase in chaotic, less targeted attacks.

Home invasions have risen to 37%, while kidnappings account for 52% of the incidents. France has led the charge with 30 incidents by mid-2026, a significant increase from 19 in 2025. Data leaks have been identified as the main reason for the surge in violence in France.

The use of extortion attempts, blocked transfers, and funds later frozen or returned further adds to the estimated losses, which stand at $316 million in 2024, $180 million in 2025, and $107 million by mid-2026. Chainalysis considers these figures to be underestimated due to only including known cases.
