France Surpasses US as Hotbed of Violent Crypto Attacks
Chainalysis reports that violent crypto attacks have stolen more than $30 million during the first half of 2026. This total already exceeds half of last year's record loss of $58 million.
The number of successful payments from these attacks has increased, with a 26% success rate in 2026 compared to 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024. However, the attempted extractions show a larger financial footprint than completed crypto attacks.
France has emerged as a major hotspot for these attacks, accounting for 37% of documented cases in 2026. The country's rise can be attributed to exposed personal information, with a French tax official allegedly selling dossiers on wealthy crypto holders in 2024.
Chainalysis groups successful attackers based on how they move stolen cryptocurrency. Less sophisticated criminals send the money to centralized exchanges without attempting to hide the trails, while more experienced attackers utilize decentralized exchanges and other tools.
