Frankendancer Support Ends as Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Nears
Jump Crypto's Firedancer team is ending support for Frankendancer, the hybrid Solana validator client that has been running on mainnet since September 2024. The move comes ahead of Alpenglow, Solana's next major consensus upgrade, which is set to activate in October 2026.
Frankendancer was a temporary solution created by combining Firedancer's high-performance networking and block production components with Agave's runtime and consensus layers. As of mid-to-late 2026, the combined stake represented by Firedancer-family clients (both the full version and Frankendancer) sits between 14% and 26% of total Solana stake.
The retirement of Frankendancer is not arbitrary, but rather a necessity due to the upcoming Alpenglow upgrade. This new consensus-layer overhaul fundamentally changes how the network reaches agreement on transactions, using a new protocol called Votor that brings transaction finality down to approximately 150 milliseconds from the current 12.8 seconds.
Validators currently running Frankendancer will need to either upgrade to full Firedancer or switch back to Agave before October, when Alpenglow activates through Agave 4.3. The feature gates are expected to open in late September, and validators should watch this timeline closely for a smooth transition.
