Fraser Backs Stablecoin Legislation Despite Banking Sector Concerns
Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser has publicly expressed her support for the Clarity Act, a piece of legislation aimed at regulating stablecoins. She believes that the bill would benefit the financial system as a whole.
In an interview with Fox Business, Fraser emphasized the importance of passing the Clarity Act, despite ongoing efforts by banks to revise its treatment of stablecoin rewards.
The main point of contention revolves around rewards paid to holders of stablecoins. Banks argue that yield-bearing products could pull deposits away from traditional lenders, potentially reducing their ability to lend, especially in communities with limited access to large financial institutions.
However, crypto companies counter that broad restrictions would curb competition and slow innovation. A Senate compromise would bar platforms from paying rewards solely for holding a stablecoin, while still allowing incentives tied to transactions and payments.
