FSB Warns of AI-Driven Cyber Risk Threatening Global Financial Stability
The Financial Stability Board has issued a warning to G20 finance ministers about the threat of AI-driven cyber risk to global financial stability. Chair Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, stated that frontier AI models have become the single most pressing threat.
Frontier AI models are the most powerful systems currently in development and can change the entire playbook of cyber attacks. The problem isn't just the tech, but also the concentration of financial sector dependence on a small handful of technology providers.
Bailey flagged two distinct risks: the offensive capability advanced AI systems hand to bad actors and the sector's growing reliance on a few key tech suppliers. He stressed that many countries lack protocols needed to manage the deployment and development of these advanced AI systems, with regulatory frameworks playing catch-up.
