Fundstrat Clients' Tiny Bitcoin Bet Became an 85% Portfolio
Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat Global, shared a surprising story about his firm's early bitcoin allocation strategy. The plan called for clients to invest just 2% of their portfolio in Bitcoin back when it traded below $1,000.
Lee revealed that this modest bet has become an oversized winner over the past decade, as the price of Bitcoin skyrocketed and the initial allocation grew to account for nearly 85% of some client portfolios. He noted that clients didn't keep adding more funds to their Bitcoin investments, but rather let the asset appreciate on its own.
Lee's comments come at a time when he believes the crypto market has already navigated one of its uglier periods, which he compares to a bear market in stocks. He estimates that around 80-90% of investors have no exposure to cryptocurrencies, and asks whether they want to be right or make money.
Lee is optimistic about the next 12 months for crypto, citing the growth of crypto-linked equities and the increasing leverage in the market, especially in Korea. He also believes that blockchain technology will reshape financial services and create new opportunities for wealth creation.
