Fundstrat Sounds Alarm on Bitcoin's Low Volatility
Bitcoin's volatility has been at an all-time low for weeks, leading Fundstrat's head of digital asset strategy, Sean Farrell, to warn that a significant price movement could be imminent. Historically, periods of low volatility have preceded large price swings, with a median absolute price move of about 30% over the following 60 days. This time around, the direction of the move is uncertain, with past cases showing an even split between upward and downward movements.
The recent rebound in Bitcoin's price has been largely driven by short liquidations, which have seen traders who bet against the asset forced to cover their positions. However, Farrell notes that this pattern is not new and has been seen before, where gains were subsequently erased. He sees a similar scenario unfolding this time around.
The combination of low volatility, rising real interest rates, and short liquidations creates a complex picture for investors. The prospect of a 30% swing in either direction underscores the inherent risk in cryptocurrency markets and highlights the need for caution, especially for those with lower risk tolerance.
