Fundstrat Sounds Alarm on Bitcoin's 'Tipping Point' Volatility
According to Fundstrat's head of digital asset strategy, Sean Farrell, Bitcoin's volatility is nearing a record low. This pattern has historically preceded significant price movements, with a median absolute price move of about 30% over the following 60 days.
In past periods with similarly low volatility, four cases ended higher and four ended lower. The current low-volatility environment comes amid mixed macroeconomic signals, including rising long-term real interest rates. Higher real rates tend to put downward pressure on risk assets like Bitcoin.
The recent rebound in Bitcoin's price appears to be largely driven by short liquidations, with Bitcoin perpetual futures open interest falling about 8% after August 14. However, Fundstrat's Farrell cautions that this pattern is not new and may not hold unless broader market conditions shift.
