Fusaka Upgrade Unveils Ethereum's Path to Modular Scalability
The Ethereum network is undergoing significant upgrades to improve its scalability and efficiency. The latest upgrade, Fusaka, combines the Osaka execution layer update with the Fulu consensus layer improvements. This marks the 17th major upgrade for the project.
Fusaka includes several key components, including Lean Consensus, which aims to achieve faster finality, Lean Data, which focuses on post-quantum cryptography, and Lean Execution, which targets a more minimal virtual machine. PeerDAS (EIP-7594) is a crucial part of the upgrade, changing how nodes handle data by replacing full blob downloads with data sampling.
This allows Ethereum to scale blob throughput without increasing hardware requirements for every validator, reducing bandwidth requirements by 87.5%. The upgrade also includes EIP-7823 and EIP-7883, which optimize the ModExp precompile, and EIP-7642, which removes pre-merge fields and receipt Bloom from the networking protocol.
The increased capacity will benefit rollups like Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism, which use Ethereum for settlement and data availability. Lowering data costs makes transactions cheaper for users, helping to avoid the bottleneck where blob fees spike when demand surges.
