G20 Endorses Clearer Regulatory Pathways for Digital Assets
G20 finance ministers and central bank governors have endorsed clearer regulatory pathways for digital assets at their recent meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. The group recognizes the transformative role that digital financial innovation can play in supporting broad-based economic growth.
The G20's existing digital asset agenda has been expanded to connect regulatory clarity more directly with economic growth and private-sector development. This includes commitments to advance responsible and effective regulatory and supervisory frameworks that preserve financial stability, support economic growth, and establish clear pathways for sound digital financial innovation.
The group also places global stablecoins among the next areas of international regulatory scrutiny, with officials expecting an FSB summary examining cross-border implications, available data sources, and remaining information challenges involving global stablecoin arrangements. Stablecoins are designed to maintain a steady value by tracking another asset, most commonly the U.S. dollar.
The G20 has also urged tougher enforcement of anti-money laundering rules on virtual assets, with 34% of 149 assessed jurisdictions found to be largely compliant with Recommendation 15, the global standard covering virtual assets and service providers.
