G7 Issues Quantum Security Alert: Transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography Now

The G7 has issued an alert to countries and companies to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography as soon as possible. The warning comes in a report titled 'Preparing for the Post-Quantum Era', published on September 3, 2026. According to the document, public key signatures could be broken by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer.

The G7 is particularly concerned about the threat of 'collect now, decrypt later'. This involves storing encrypted data today and then decrypting it when computational power becomes sufficient.

However, this threat is somewhat mitigated for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, as public keys and transaction histories are exposed on the blockchain. Nevertheless, the question remains how long a key will remain secure.
