Garlinghouse Sees Progress on US Crypto Regulations Amid Ongoing Debate
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse expressed optimism about US crypto regulations after meeting with key stakeholders in Washington. The meetings, which included a White House discussion and the inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee gathering of the CFTC, highlighted the need for clearer rules to govern digital assets.
Garlinghouse stated that existing financial regulations no longer fit the current market conditions, emphasizing the importance of updating these rules to better serve consumers, businesses, and innovation. The Ripple CEO's comments echo the company's long-standing push for federal oversight in the crypto space.
The CLARITY Act, a comprehensive market structure bill, is currently stalled in the Senate due to unresolved disputes over issues such as stablecoin rewards, decentralized finance protections, ethics rules, illicit finance controls, and consumer safeguards. A cloture vote on September 15 will determine whether the Senate can begin formal consideration of the bill.
Garlinghouse's appointment to the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee in February adds his voice to the growing chorus advocating for clearer regulations. The committee includes industry leaders from companies such as Coinbase, Uniswap Labs, and Nasdaq.
