Gates Seeks Global Framework for Regulating AI Risks
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is pushing for an international framework to regulate AI risks, citing that individual governments and companies can't handle increasingly sophisticated models on their own.
Gates hopes to discuss this idea with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his trip to China in November, which could potentially lead to limitations on the release of hazardous AI models if the US takes the lead.
He wants governments to monitor whether advanced models can create molecules or make biological attacks easier, as well as address cybersecurity concerns, especially since recent events have shown that AI systems are becoming more adept at identifying and exploiting software flaws.
Gates suggests creating an international regulatory body similar to those for aviation safety and nuclear inspection, with a focus on monitoring high-risk capabilities rather than severely limiting regular AI development.
