GBP Holds Gains as Weakness in USD Drives Rally
The British Pound (GBP) is holding its gains against a weakening US Dollar (USD), despite downbeat UK Retail Sales data released on Friday. The GBP/USD pair has pushed to six-month highs, with a weekly rally of 0.8% in sight. This resilience is largely due to the continued weakness of the USD, which is being pressured by the Treasury's bond buyback plans.
The UK Retail Sales data showed that consumption fell by 0.5% in July, matching market expectations. Year-over-year sales increased at a rate of 1.6%, down from 3.8% in June and below the consensus estimate of 2.2%. The decline was broad-based, with sales of all other products except fuel falling by 0.9% in July.
The US Treasury's plan to double liquidity through bond buybacks is seen as a debt-management swap, which aims to stem the yield rally. However, strategists at BBH warn that investors may view this move as an attempt to manage yields rather than liquidity, undermining US fiscal credibility and dragging on the USD.
