Gen Z Embraces Crypto: Over Half Now Own or Have Owned Digital Assets
A recent survey by Gemini found that over half of Gen Z adults worldwide now own or have owned cryptocurrency. The survey, which was conducted between May and July 2024, polled 6,000 adults across five countries: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Singapore, and Turkey.
The results showed that 51% of Gen Z respondents aged 18 to 29 own or have previously owned cryptocurrency. This figure is significantly higher than the 35% reported by the general population. In the US alone, 51% of Gen Z respondents said they own or have owned crypto, outpacing Millennials at 49% and Gen X at 29%.
The survey also found that one in three US Gen Z respondents would feel comfortable putting at least 5% of their portfolio into crypto, compared to 21% of the broader population. Nearly half of Gen Z respondents globally said they invest in crypto to generate income, and a similar share (48%) said they were more likely to buy crypto because of access through exchange-traded funds.
The results suggest that younger investors are more open to new investment channels, with 31% of Gen Z respondents strongly agreeing that the industry needs less government regulation. This attitude towards oversight differs significantly from older age groups.
