GenLayer's AI-Native Blockchain Protocol Aims to Resolve Complex Disputes
Albert Castellana is a Spanish blockchain entrepreneur and CEO of GenLayer Labs. The company develops an AI-native blockchain protocol called GenLayer, designed to resolve complex disputes between autonomous AI agents. Castellana has been in the crypto industry since 2013, working across various areas including decentralized finance, staking, and governance.
He co-founded Atraura Blockchain and was a product contributor and council member of the NEM.io Foundation. In 2018, he left the NEM council to join Radix DLT as Chief Product Officer. During his time at Radix, Castellana worked with Edgars Nemše, who later became one of his co-founders at StakeHound and GenLayer Labs.
In 2020, Castellana co-founded StakeHound, a platform for using staked Proof-of-Stake assets within DeFi. However, the company's development was disrupted in 2021 due to a key-management incident. This event had a significant impact on Castellana's work and led him to develop GenLayer.
In 2023, Castellana co-founded GenLayer Labs with Nemše and José María Lago. The company has since raised $7.5 million in funding from investors including North Island Ventures, Arrington Capital, and Node Capital. As of September 2026, GenLayer is still in pre-mainnet development.
