German Crypto Exchange Self-Certification Deadline Looms on January 1, 2027
The German Crypto Asset Tax Transparency Act (KStTG) has set a deadline for crypto exchange self-certification by January 1, 2027. The law requires providers to identify users for tax purposes and report certain transactions to the Federal Central Tax Office. Existing customers who opened their accounts before December 31, 2025, will receive a request from their exchange over the coming months for self-certification.
The request includes details such as country of tax residence, tax identification number, and confirmation that the information is accurate. If users ignore the request, they won't lose their balance but won't be able to trade with it. The block will occur after a 60-90 day period following the initial request.
Regulated exchanges have been surveyed, and five of six providers carry relevant help articles, while one provider has none. The law prescribes a sequence of stages: first the request, then the reminder, followed by the formal notice, and finally the block.
