German Investors Face Deadlines for Proof of Reserves Verification
The concept of proof of reserves has been gaining attention in the crypto space, particularly among German investors who face deadlines to sell or withdraw their balances from trading venues. By August 31, 2026, several exchanges will require investors to verify that the balance shown in their account overview actually exists on the exchange.
A reserve attestation is an audit procedure carried out by independent auditors at regular intervals. It measures whether a custodian genuinely holds the assets it claims to hold on behalf of its customers. To do this, the auditor takes a snapshot of all account balances and compares it with the holdings on the exchange's blockchain addresses.
The process involves a Merkle tree structure built from checksums, which creates a single fingerprint called the Merkle root. If any digit in the balance changes, the Merkle root changes completely, preventing exchanges from quietly removing individual balances after the fact.
