A German journalist, Angelique Geray, created an undercover persona named Katya to investigate how covert Russian agents operate in Germany. As a self-proclaimed fan of Vladimir Putin, Katya built a following on social media and established contacts. The agents quickly offered her payment in Bitcoin for unspecified assignments, including simple tasks such as taking photos or picking up packages.

Geray and other RTL journalists observed the recruitment process firsthand, noting that new agents were initially given small tasks before being drawn into more serious operations. They did not understand the overall plan, but knew only their own roles.

Jovica Jović, a member of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance and one of Germany's most prominent pro-Russian figures, invited Katya to meet in person. During the meeting, he spoke about his activities and hinted at the involvement of Russian intelligence agencies.
