Global ChatGPT Outage Exposes Centralized AI Risks

OpenAI's ChatGPT suffered a global outage lasting nearly 50 minutes on Saturday, affecting users worldwide. The disruption, which began around 5 a.m. ET, locked out consumers and developers from accessing the chatbot, its mobile app, developer APIs, and Codex coding platform.

The company confirmed the failure on its status page, flagging elevated error rates for ChatGPT, Codex, and multiple API endpoints. The outage affected users across the United States, Europe, India, Japan, and Australia, with over 3,000 reports filed on DownDetector.

OpenAI's second outage in three days has reignited concerns about concentration risk in AI infrastructure, with some arguing that decentralized compute networks could provide a more resilient alternative. Bittensor, a leading decentralized compute network, saw its token price slip by 3.6% over the past 24 hours, but no trading data links this move to the outage.

The valuation gap between centralized and decentralized AI enterprises remains stark, with OpenAI's market value estimated at around $12 trillion compared to the decentralized sector's estimated $12 billion.
