Global Crypto Intelligence Network Takes Shape as Governments and Exchanges Collaborate
The cryptocurrency ecosystem is undergoing significant changes as governments and exchanges collaborate to build a global crypto intelligence network.
This infrastructure connects on-chain transactions to real-world identities, making it increasingly difficult for illicit activities to remain hidden. Blockchain analytics firms are providing valuable tools for investigators, enabling them to follow funds across wallets, exchanges, and other blockchain services.
The scale of cryptocurrency crime is staggering: Chainalysis' 2026 Crypto Crime Report reveals that at least $154 billion in illicit transactions occurred in 2025, a 162% year-over-year increase. Sanctions evasion was a major contributor to this growth, with the ruble-backed A7A5 stablecoin processing over $93.3 billion in transactions.
Exchanges are also playing a crucial role by connecting wallet addresses with verified customer accounts through Know Your Customer (KYC) systems. This cooperation is being driven by regulatory efforts, including the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) recommendations on stablecoins and peer-to-peer transactions involving unhosted wallets.
