Global Operation Targets Child Exploitation Networks Using Cryptocurrency
A global law enforcement operation, dubbed 'Operation Lighthouse,' has targeted networks of child exploitation using cryptocurrency. Chainalysis, a blockchain intelligence firm, organized the multi-day effort with the help of exchanges Binance and Coinbase, as well as law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The operation focused on over 29,000 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identifiers, targeting more than 100 forums and hubs. This led to over 14,000 leads for further investigation, with suspects located in 125 countries.
Some of the suspects were already registered sex offenders. The 'inherent transparency' of blockchain makes it difficult for criminals to hide, according to Binance's senior program manager for anti-child sexual exploitation, Gavin Sather.
