Gnosis Chain Sets Sights on Ethereum Economic Zone Rollup
Gnosis Chain has taken a major step towards becoming an Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) rollup after its governance proposal, GIP-153, passed with overwhelming support. The vote cleared the way for Gnosis Chain to transition from a standalone layer-1 network to one that relies on Ethereum for settlement.
The proposal was approved by 123,158 GNO in support, with only 115 against and 151 abstaining across 54 voters. This surpassed the required quorum threshold of 75,000 GNO.
As part of this transition, Gnosis Chain's existing validator infrastructure will be retired, shifting settlement responsibilities to Ethereum validators. The target timeline for this change is late 2026 or early 2027, contingent on the readiness of EEZ technology.
The EEZ framework aims to reduce fragmentation in the Ethereum scaling landscape by enabling cross-rollup smart contract execution without bridges. Standard Chartered's Geoffrey Kendrick views this as a key benefit, arguing that it will reduce reliance on vulnerable bridge components and increase usability of assets in EVM chains.
