Gnosis Ditches Standalone Chain for Ethereum Layer-2
Gnosis, a blockchain network known for its prediction market platform and GNO token, is transitioning from its standalone layer-1 chain to an Ethereum layer-2 network. The decision was approved by GnosisDAO, marking a significant shift in strategy.
The move is driven by the evolution of Ethereum scaling solutions, particularly layer-2 technologies like optimistic rollups and zero-knowledge rollups that offer comparable security and scalability benefits without the overhead of maintaining a separate validator set.
GNO stakers will see their staking rewards end as the network phases out, leading to an expected unstaking of approximately 350,000 GNO tokens, about 27% of the circulating supply. This could introduce short-term selling pressure but so far, market reaction has been positive, with GNO trading at $114.11, up 8.91%, according to CoinMarketCap.
The transition will allow Gnosis to leverage Ethereum's established security and liquidity while reducing operational complexity. It also raises questions about the long-term value proposition of GNO, as staking rewards end and the token's utility may shift. The community's response to these changes will be critical in the coming months.
