Gold-Backed Stablecoins Gain Ground Amid Safe-Haven Appetite
Gold-backed stablecoins are gaining attention in cryptocurrency markets due to rising demand for safe-haven assets and growing comfort with blockchain-based finance.
The two best-known examples of gold-backed stablecoins are Tether Gold (XAUT) and PAX Gold (PAXG), which allow holders to trade fractional gold ownership 24/7, unlike traditional stock market hours.
Tether Gold has become the category leader, controlling around 60% of total gold-backed stablecoin supply early in 2026, and its issuer's gold holdings have grown large enough to rank among the world's biggest reserves, ahead of several national governments.
The GENIUS Act provided regulatory clarity for dollar-backed stablecoins, which has contributed to the growth of tokenized gold. Some governments are also experimenting with gold-backed digital currencies, such as Kyrgyzstan's own stablecoin for modernizing cross-border payments while maintaining state control over reserves.
