Gold Surges to Three-Month High as Dollar Weakness Continues

Gold prices have surged to their highest level in over three months, reaching $4,641.27 an ounce in Asian trading on Monday. This increase follows a weak US dollar and concerns around Treasury intervention and US fiscal policy, which have fueled demand for hard assets like gold and Bitcoin.

The dollar has remained near multi-month lows after falling sharply last week, and its weakness is expected to continue affecting gold prices. The Treasury's decision to expand buybacks of longer-dated securities has revived concerns about debt sustainability and the purchasing power of the dollar, encouraging investors to favor scarce assets like bullion.

According to Marc Chandler, managing director at Bannockburn Global Forex, gold's move above $4,600 has strengthened its technical position. However, he cautions that momentum has become stretched after the rapid advance.

The rally now faces a more conventional macro test with the release of July personal income and spending figures, including the PCE price index, on Wednesday. The latest reading showed headline PCE inflation at 3.7% in June, still well above the Fed's 2% goal. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to deliver keynote remarks at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on Friday, which will be scrutinized for any clues about future policy.
