Golden Cross and Death Cross: Bitcoin's Momentum Indicator
Bitcoin is nearing a golden cross signal, a pattern where its 50-day moving average surpasses its 200-day average. This setup has produced an average three-month gain of 24.9% since 2012, with only three out of twelve instances lasting for a full year.
The longest-lasting golden crosses have generated average 12-month gains of 250%, including a 306% increase in the first instance and a 312% gain in the third. However, not all signals aged well, with two crosses being invalidated within two months and another barely moving the needle before collapsing.
Meanwhile, $USDT dominance is approaching a death cross, where its 50-day average falls below its 200-day average. This often indicates risk-on behavior as capital rotates out of stablecoins and into cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
The combined signals point to strengthening bitcoin momentum alongside a shrinking share of the market held in stablecoins. However, the reliability of the golden cross remains mixed, and traders should be cautious when interpreting these charts as a clean buy signal.
