Government Debt Fuels Debasement Trade, Boosting Bitcoin and Other Digital Assets
The U.S. government's growing debt is sparking a 'debasement trade,' where investors seek alternative stores of value, such as Bitcoin (BTC). According to Grayscale's crypto research team, this trend will benefit digital assets like BTC, ETH, and ZEC.
The debasement trade involves buying assets that hedge against currency devaluation. With the U.S. public debt exceeding $40 trillion for the first time, investors are turning to scarce assets like Bitcoin as a safe-haven.
Grayscale notes that the government's growing debt is driving up borrowing costs, and treating symptoms rather than curing the disease of structural deficits. The Treasury's buyback operations have been increased, but this may ultimately lead to further dollar devaluation.
