Grayscale: Onchain Vaults Poised to Revolutionize Traditional Finance
Grayscale is predicting that onchain vaults could be the next major cryptocurrency innovation to gain broad adoption in traditional finance. These structures combine investor funds and deploy them across yield-producing strategies, with rules varying among vaults but often operating within set risk limits.
The firm notes that over 3,000 onchain vaults hold more than $7 billion in assets, positioning them as a significant player in the crypto market. This number is dwarfed by the global CLO market, which holds around $1.5 trillion across thousands of vehicles managed by more than 250 firms.
Grayscale's head of research, Zach Pandl, says vaults offer 'full transparency, operational efficiencies, and potentially higher liquidity' due to their use of smart contracts on blockchain networks like Ethereum, Base, and Solana. This design replaces traditional intermediaries with direct management of assets and settlements on the blockchain.
However, the firm notes that regulation remains a significant obstacle for onchain vaults, particularly in the US, where securities law creates uncertainty around discretion-based strategies. Grayscale believes that preserving the efficiency of smart contracts while meeting legal standards is crucial for widespread adoption.
