Grayscale Sees Bitcoin, Ethereum, Zcash Gaining From Surging US Debt
Grayscale, a prominent cryptocurrency asset manager, has identified three digital assets that could potentially benefit from rising US government debt. According to Grayscale's research, the growing national debt could erode confidence in fiat currencies and drive investors towards alternative stores of value like cryptocurrencies.
The assets identified by Grayscale as potential beneficiaries are Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Zcash (ZEC). The report notes that these digital assets offer unique characteristics that make them appealing to investors seeking alternatives to traditional investments. For instance, BTC's limited supply and lack of a government issuer contribute to its scarcity argument.
Grayscale also highlights the role of Treasury buybacks in addressing bond market pressure, but emphasizes that these operations do not address the underlying structural deficits driving the growth of US debt. The report points out that the federal deficit is projected to continue rising, with the Congressional Budget Office forecasting a $1.9 trillion deficit in 2026 and $3.1 trillion by 2036.
The combination of growing government debt and private-sector borrowing to finance infrastructure development could put upward pressure on interest rates and increase concerns about long-term fiscal stability, potentially driving demand for alternative stores of value like cryptocurrencies.
