Grayscale's Litecoin Trust Faces Uncertain Future Amid ETF Competition
Grayscale's Litecoin Trust is still in limbo, stuck between being an over-the-counter trust and an exchange-traded fund. Despite its ambitions to become a Wall Street ETF, Grayscale faces stiff competition from Canary Capital's already-listed Litecoin ETF on Nasdaq. The SEC's approval of generic listing standards for commodity-based trust shares has made it easier for exchanges to list products that meet the standards, reducing the importance of the 19b-4 clock.
The new landscape raises questions about the relevance of Grayscale's LTCN, which still lacks a redemption program and holds approximately $82.3 million in net assets as of June 30, down from $175.9 million a year earlier. With investors already able to buy Canary's Litecoin ETF on Nasdaq, Grayscale's trust may struggle to justify its existence.
The SEC's approval odds for major spot crypto ETF filings have indeed risen sharply since the new standards arrived, with Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart predicting a 100% chance of approval for products like Litecoin. This shift in regulatory approach has changed the game, making it easier for companies to roll out commodity-based trust shares.
