Grayscale's Zcash Fund Hits $500M, Affiliate Contribution Revealed
Grayscale's Zcash fund has surpassed $500 million in assets under management (AUM), holding more than 550,000 ZEC. The asset manager made this announcement on September 8th, but a closer look at the Form 8-K filing reveals that $100 million of this milestone came from an affiliate of Grayscale's sponsor.
According to the filing, DCG International Investments Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Digital Currency Group, Inc., acquired ZCSH shares worth around $100 million by exchanging ZEC through an authorized participant. This means that nearly one-fifth of the fund's milestone was an in-kind transfer from within the same corporate family.
The breakdown of the funding is quite telling: Grayscale reports that the fund saw cumulative inflows of over $70 million in the two weeks since launching as an ETP, aside from the affiliate contribution. This suggests that genuine third-party demand for the first U.S. spot Zcash exchange-traded fund (ETF) was around $70 million.
While this distinction may seem minor, it changes what the AUM figure represents. It's no longer a clean readout of investor appetite but rather a measure of the fund's scale.
