GRIT Storms Steam with Revamped Mechanics and Dubious Past
GRIT, a Wild West-themed battle royale game, has finally arrived on Steam after a four-year absence from the platform. Initially announced in June 2022 as the first blockchain game on the Epic Games Store, GRIT was designed to allow players to own and resell in-game assets as NFTs. However, due to Valve's 2021 ban on games using blockchain technology, the game's developers had to remove these features to meet Steam's requirements.
The game has undergone significant changes since its initial launch. The free-to-play model with player-owned assets has been replaced by a paid subscription system, with players able to purchase CattlePasses that grant access to various cosmetic items. The game's mechanics have also been tweaked, with the addition of Wildcards and a train that runs through the closing zone.
The game's central idea, where each gun is also a playing card, has received praise for its innovative approach to loot and team coordination. However, the game's context and history raise concerns about its long-term viability, particularly given its reliance on population and concurrent player count.
