GTA VI Scams Net Thousands as Anticipation Reaches Fever Pitch
GTA VI has become the latest target in a wave of scams exploiting gamers' anticipation for upcoming releases. A group of websites is charging fans $250 in cryptocurrency to unlock GTA VI before its November 19, 2026 release date.
These sites use a familiar playbook: countdown timers, recognizable artwork, and payment windows that close quickly. The scammers are after one thing, money, and they want it in the form of untraceable cryptocurrency payments.
This is not an isolated incident; GTA has been the most impersonated game name in cybercrime, according to Kaspersky's 2025 research, with over 4.45 million attack attempts disguised using the GTA name that year.
Alex Zhou, Lead Gaming Industry Analyst at LDShop, notes that these scams rely on speed rather than sophistication. 'People check less carefully when they think an offer might disappear in a few hours,' he explains. The longer the anticipation for a game's release, the more effective this tactic becomes.
