Guida Prepares Emergency Code as BIP-110 Faces Miner Opposition

Bitcoin developer Chris Guida has prepared an emergency code to ensure that BIP-110 is enforced on the network, even if major mining pools refuse to support it. The proposal, which aims to reduce non-monetary data on the blockchain, has sparked debate within the community.

BIP-110 targets Ordinals, a protocol that allows users to inscribe data onto satoshis and create NFTs on the Bitcoin blockchain. Proponents argue that such transactions bloat the blockchain and deviate from Bitcoin's primary purpose as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system.

Guida has updated the 2017 proof-of-work (PoW) change code to be compatible with the latest version of Bitcoin Knots, a full-node implementation. This move is designed as a fallback if major mining pools do not support BIP-110, ensuring that the network can still enforce the intended changes.

Luke Dashjr, a prominent Bitcoin Core contributor, has expressed hope that the measure will never be needed but emphasized the importance of being prepared. Supporters argue that a credible PoW change threat is necessary to ensure miners fulfill their responsibilities to node operators.
