Hamas Crypto Fundraising Efforts Disrupted by US Authorities
US authorities have made significant strides in disrupting cryptocurrency fundraising efforts by Hamas. According to recent developments, over $560,000 in crypto donations intended for the foreign terrorist group has been seized by the Justice Department.
The seizures are part of a broader effort to disrupt Hamas' fundraising and recruitment communications. Authorities took control of website domains and communication platforms used for these purposes, effectively intercepting money that would have gone towards the Al-Qassam Brigade, Hamas' military wing.
FBI affidavits reveal that Hamas began testing virtual currency fundraising in 2019 through its Telegram channel before shifting to official websites. These sites boasted that Bitcoin donations were untraceable and would be used for violent causes.
Special Agent Justin A. Garris emphasized the impact of the seizures, stating, 'Our team's ability to take that cryptocurrency degrades their ability to resupply their military as well as recruit new members into the military.' Authorities believe this could be only a fraction of the total funding effort and are committed to continuing their investigation.
