Hammack's Hawkish Stance Sparks Rate Hike Fears in Crypto Market
Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack has once again called for immediate U.S. interest rate increases, citing current borrowing conditions as insufficient to restrain economic activity and inflation.
Hammack made her stance clear during an appearance at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce in Ohio, where she argued that businesses continue to identify growth opportunities without being significantly impacted by current interest rates.
The July producer price index (PPI) rose 4.7% annually, which is below the 4.9% forecast and down from 5.5% in June. Hammack believes this data supports her position that monetary policy needs additional restraint to reduce inflation towards the Federal Reserve's 2% target.
The potential for rate hikes has put the crypto market and stocks on alert, with Bitcoin trading near $63,616 as markets assess Hammack's hawkish stance.
