Hardware Wallet Risks Exposed: How DOGE Investors Can Protect Their Holdings
In August, a major incident involving Coldcard hardware wallets raised concerns about the security of cryptocurrency storage. Mishaboar, a leading Dogecoin community contributor, identified several risks associated with hardware wallets that DOGE investors often overlook.
Mishaboar explained that hardware wallets do not store coins themselves but rather the keys that grant access to them. If the hardware creating those keys is compromised, the assets are at risk. Some users try to mitigate this by generating seed phrases offline using ordinary PCs, but Mishaboar warns that this approach provides only an illusion of security if the operating system is infected with malware.
The expert recommends combining several security methods to protect DOGE holdings, including splitting balances across devices from different brands, enabling a passphrase, and keeping physical backups strictly offline. As an alternative to electronic generators, Mishaboar described a manual method for creating keys using dice rolls, but emphasized that this still requires entering results on a PC, exposing the user to hidden malware risks.
