Hargreaves Lansdown Brings Crypto ETNs to UK Clients
Hargreaves Lansdown, the largest retail investment platform in the UK, has launched cryptocurrency ETN trading for its clients. This move follows the decision by the UK regulator FCA to lift the ban on retail access to cryptocurrency ETNs.
The launch took place in early September 2026 and includes exchange-traded notes linked to Bitcoin and Ethereum. These instruments track the price of the underlying assets without requiring investors to purchase cryptocurrencies directly.
To gain access, clients must meet certain requirements, including being certified investors with high income or restricted investors planning to invest less than 10% of their net assets. A suitability check is also mandatory before purchase, and a 24-hour waiting period is set by the FCA after each transaction.
Hargreaves Lansdown warns clients about the key risks associated with these instruments, including the complete loss of invested funds and sharp price changes in Bitcoin and Ethereum.
