Hargreaves Lansdown Opens Crypto ETNs to UK Users
Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK's largest direct-to-consumer investment platform, has introduced crypto exchange-traded notes (ETNs) to its users. This move allows millions of retail investors regulated exposure to Bitcoin and Ether.
The new offering comes nearly a year after the ban on retail access was lifted in October 2025. Hargreaves Lansdown holds over a third of the UK market, with around 33.6% of assets under administration, according to The Boring Money Market Monitor Q3 2025 report.
Crypto ETNs track the price of Bitcoin or Ethereum but investors don't own the coins directly. Instead, the notes are issued by a bank or financial firm that physically holds the cryptocurrencies in custody. Hargreaves Lansdown is charging a 0.35% annual account fee to hold crypto ETNs in a Fund and Share Account or a SIPP, capped at £12.50 per month.
