Hashdex Bitcoin ETF First to Shut Down in US Amid Low Net Asset Value
The first spot Bitcoin ETF to be shut down in the US has been announced by Cryptocurrency asset management company Hashdex. The Hashdex Bitcoin ETF, traded on the NYSE Arca under the ticker DEFI, will cease operations after August 17, 2026. According to documents filed with the SEC, the fund had approximately $14.7 million in assets under management as of July 30, 2026.
Hashdex stated that the decision to liquidate was made due to the fund's low net asset value compared to operating expenses, making it economically unfeasible for DEFI to continue operating in the long term. The company will liquidate its portfolio by selling the remaining Bitcoins after August 17, and investors who do not sell their shares by then will receive a cash payment equivalent to the net asset value of their shares on the liquidation date.
Hashdex warned that price movements during this period could be significant, affecting the amount distributed to investors. The company's total assets managed in other products offered to US investors exceed $200 million. Payments to investors are expected to be made around August 28, 2026.
