Hashdex Closes First-Ever US Bitcoin Spot ETF Amid Operational Challenges
Hashdex's Bitcoin spot ETF, the first of its kind in the US, is set to close operations due to persistent low net assets relative to operating expenses. The decision was made after assessing various factors including fund size, liquidity, and investor demand. As of July 30th, 2026, the DEFI ETF managed assets valued at approximately $14.7 million.
The ETF, which provided collateralized exposure directly to Bitcoin price movements, will be delisted from the NYSE Arca after trading closes on August 17th, 2026. Shareholders who have not sold their shares by this date will receive a cash payment equivalent to the net asset value of their holdings on the fund's liquidation date, expected around August 28th, 2026.
Hashdex stated that the ETF was unsustainable in the long term due to its low assets and high operating costs. The company has given investors one final chance to sell their shares before the delisting and liquidation process begins.
