Hashdex Ditches Underperforming Spot Bitcoin ETF Amid Market Dominance
Hashdex Asset Management is closing its spot Bitcoin ETF, ticker DEFI, after two years of struggling to gain traction in a market dominated by heavyweights like BlackRock. The fund will stop trading on NYSE Arca on August 17, 2026, and investors can expect cash payouts from liquidating distributions around August 28.
The fund held approximately $14.7 million in assets and about 225 BTC as of July 30. It peaked at just $18 million in net assets during its two-year run.
DEFI was originally launched as a futures-based Bitcoin product before Hashdex converted it into a spot-focused ETF, designed to track the Nasdaq Bitcoin Reference Price by holding actual Bitcoin rather than derivatives contracts.
