Hashdex's DEFI Delisted Due to High Operating Costs

Hashdex's DEFI, the first U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF to launch, will cease trading on August 24 at the latest, according to an 8-K filing with the SEC. The fund, which listed in January 2024 and had assets of about $14.7 million as of July 30, will be delisted from NYSE Arca after its final session on August 17. Shareholders can sell their shares through the close, but those remaining will receive a cash distribution after the fund sells its remaining Bitcoin.

The decision to delist DEFI was reportedly due to the high operating costs associated with maintaining a small ETF, which is considered a tax on a thin book of business. This move marks a trend in the industry, where smaller funds struggle to attract and retain assets, while larger ones continue to dominate the market.

CoinDesk noted that WisdomTree's BTCW, another U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF, has assets of $142.4 million, while BlackRock's IBIT boasts over $47 billion in assets under management. The industry is shifting towards scale-based listings, where larger funds with more substantial market presence are prioritized.
