Hawaii Cracks Down on Crypto ATMs Amid Rising Scam Losses
Hawaii is set to become the latest US state to ban cryptocurrency kiosks and ATMs after its governor signed off on legislation. The ban will take effect on October 1, following the passage of House Bill 1642 by Hawaii’s legislature in May. Governor Josh Green signed the bill into law in July, citing data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center that reported Americans lost over $11 billion to digital asset scams in 2025.
The bureau also recorded 826 complaints related to crypto from Hawaii residents in 2025, with the state suffering around $80 million in losses. This move follows similar legislation in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Indiana, which began enforcing a ban on digital asset kiosks earlier this year.
Currently, there are 57 crypto ATMs and kiosks operating across four of Hawaii’s main islands, according to data from CoinATMRadar. The new law aims to prevent further losses and protect residents from falling victim to scams related to these machines.
