Hawaii Kicks Off US Crypto ATM Ban Trend
Hawaii is set to become the latest US state to ban cryptocurrency kiosks and ATMs, following Governor Josh Green's signature on legislation that passed in May. The law, which takes effect on October 1, prohibits the ownership, operation, or management of digital financial asset transaction kiosks that accept US currency for a digital financial asset.
The bill cited data from the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, which reported over $11 billion lost by Americans to scams related to digital assets in 2025. The center also recorded 826 complaints from Hawaii residents, with losses totaling around $80 million.
Hawaii joins other states like Minnesota, Tennessee, and Indiana, which have already implemented similar bans. However, some states have proposed or passed laws that place stricter regulations on crypto ATM activities, rather than a complete ban.
