Hayes Sees $1M Bitcoin Target in AI Credit Crisis
Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, is predicting that Bitcoin's price will reach $1 million due to an impending AI credit crisis. He argues that the current AI data center spending resembles debt speculation from the 2008 financial crisis, rather than a simple technology bubble.
In his essay 'Situationship', Hayes points out that investors are mistakenly viewing data centers as purely technological investments when they're actually real estate developments with rapidly depreciating chips. He believes that hyperscalers are increasingly funding these data centers with borrowed money, not free cash flow, which shifts default risk onto banks and bondholders.
Hayes expects the AI capital spending growth to decelerate in 2027, exposing weak data center loans and prompting emergency lending facilities or direct equity purchases from the Fed and Treasury. He notes that this pattern is similar to what happened during the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 pandemic response.
Hayes' forecast follows a familiar pattern from the Federal Reserve, with Chair Kevin Warsh holding interest rates steady in July while some FOMC members dissented, favoring a hike. Hayes sees this as evidence that authorities will keep credit flowing to AI projects, preventing weak borrowers from failing.
